Spatial Design and Application of Display Cabinets in Trade Shows and Exhibitions

The purpose of trade show design is to effectively convey information through integrated media such as physical displays, layouts, lighting, props, audio-visual elements, and colors, but the prerequisite is to occupy a certain spatial venue.

1. Venue and Space in Trade Shows

The exhibition venue is the primary condition for hosting exhibition events. The exhibition site must be equipped with infrastructure such as light sources, power supply, water supply and drainage systems, ventilation systems, logistics systems, and fire protection measures; collectively these are referred to as the basic infrastructure of the exhibition venue.

The specific requirements for exhibition venues and their related facilities mainly include the following points.

(1) Space Division and Use

The size of the display area and its mode of use are closely related to the scale of the exhibition. A smaller area is generally used for displaying a single product category; otherwise, too many varieties would appear crowded and undermine the exhibition effect. A larger area can be divided for use, enabling functional zoning and bringing order to the exhibition.

Some expositions combine several or even dozens of exhibition halls into a single event. Therefore, the size and characteristics of the exhibition area are what exhibition designers should pay attention to first, and also the prerequisite for the formation of an exhibition.

(2) Ceiling Height Requirements

Generally, exhibition halls impose height limits on the booths of each participating unit, because the building structures and floor heights of the halls differ. For example, the Beijing International Exhibition Center generally limits booth height to below 5m. If the exhibits are pictures, calligraphy and painting artworks, silk and cotton fabrics, or other light industrial products, there are usually no special requirements for the height of the exhibition space. If the exhibits are mechanical devices that require trailers and cranes for transport in and out, specific requirements apply to the height and strength of the ceiling.

(3) Lighting and Its Application

Due to their excessive size, modern exhibition venues mostly rely on artificial lighting for daylighting. Exhibitors are required to design the display lighting circuits, install fixtures, and enhance lighting effects when building their booths. However, the electricity consumption and usage method must be reported to the venue management department before the exhibition, to ensure safety and maintenance.

(4) Layout of Basic Facilities

The installation of light sources, power supplies, water supply and drainage systems, and ventilation systems, as well as the routing of pipelines, are all preset when the exhibition hall is built, and impose considerable restrictions and impacts on the distribution and use of the exhibition space. Changes are difficult to make. Designers must find clever ways to utilize or avoid them, and must apply to the venue management department rather than acting on their own initiative.

(5) Entrances, Exits and Aisles

Smooth entry into the exhibition space and quick exit from it are extremely important. Making visitors queue and wait creates a bad impression, and crowding would be even worse. If the exits are few and small, it would be difficult to evacuate and disperse the audience in a short time, easily causing a major hazard. Therefore, arranging the entrances and exits of the exhibition space is by no means a trivial matter; the exits for visitors and those for professional staff should be classified, and emergency exits must be established. When designing the passageways connecting the exhibition space with the entrances and exits, two points should be noted: first, the width must be sufficient; second, straightness is preferable to curves, otherwise crowding and poor circulation will result.
